Treatment for Perth Patients with Broken Capillaries

Why do Broken Capillaries Occur?

There are a number of factors that can lead to broken capillaries; the medical term for which is telangiectasia rosacea. Just beneath our skin there are large numbers of tiny, very delicate capillaries. Damage to these fragile vessels may cause them to dilate and “break”.

Once broken, the capillaries remain that way and are unable to repair themselves or constrict back to their normal thickness. This leads to the visible appearance of red, bruise-like spots and lines on the face and other areas of the body.

Causes of this include a genetic predisposition, sun damage, rosacea, facial injuries, excessive facial scrubbing, overuse of cortisone creams, certain autoimmune diseases and excessive alcohol intake.

This occurrence can also become more noticeable as we age, with the skin becoming thinner making the underlying vessels more visible.

At Vice Aesthetics in Perth, we recommend treating the vessels with the Candela Vbeam Perfecta® sooner rather than later, as the more dilated and numerous they are, the more treatments will be required to achieve optimal results.

Neck, chest and décolletage redness (Poikiloderma of Civatte)

Poikiloderma of Civatte was first described in 1923 by a French dermatologist and is caused by a combination of skin thinning, broken capillaries and pigmentation.

Poikiloderma of Civatte is the result of chronic sun damage and affects both men and women with excessive sun exposure. It is often found on the cheeks, the sides of the neck and may extend down to the chest and/or décolletage.

Most patients require 2 to 3 treatments with the Candela Vbeam Perfecta® and have a greater than 75% improvement in the appearance of their condition.

Sun Damage

Nearly all the traits we associate with skin aging are actually the result of long-term sun exposure.

Sun damage, which we acquire
not only from being outside at the beach, but also from driving in our cars, significantly ages our sun- exposed skin.

The five main signs of sun damage are: Broken capillaries (including spider veins), brown spots such as solar lentigines or freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and sagging skin.

While wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers can assist with wrinkles and the appearance of sagging, the Candela Vbeam Perfecta® is a excellent treatment for removing the broken capillary and pigmented lesions that contribute to an ageing appearance and also gives an improvement in the appearance of fine lines.

In contrast to other laser treatments the Candela Vbeam Perfecta® also has minimal downtime, with only mild swelling and redness post treatment making it easy for you to go back to your daily routine.

At Vice Aesthetics we recommend 3 treatments at 4 weekly intervals followed by maintenance treatments as required.

Post acne redness, red scars and red stretch marks

Following trauma to the skin, whether it be from acne, an injury or stretching, the skin can often have persistent redness that can last up to 12 months in some patients.

Post-acne redness is a condition that affects many patients. While there are many treatments for active acne and post-acne scarring, the post-inflammatory redness of acne is more of a challenge to treat and may remain long after the acne is gone.

The Candela Vbeam Perfecta® provides a valuable treatment option for post-acne redness and is a non-ablative laser that acts to smooth out the skin through collagen remodeling without breaking the skin.

We recommend the use of this laser for acne scar treatments, especially on newer red scars. The laser stimulates the production of new collagen, resulting in natural and healthier-looking skin and lessening the severity of the final scar.

Patients are treated a total of three to four times at three-week intervals and the number of treatments varies based on the severity and depth of the acne scarring causing the redness.

After three to four treatments most patients have a 75-90% reduction in redness.

Similar results have been found for redness post scarring or from stretch marks.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that typically occurs in fair-skinned people of northern and eastern European origin. It usually starts between the ages of 30 and 50 and while rosacea is more common in women it can present more severely in men.

Early rosacea starts with generalised facial redness and flushing. As it progresses, affected individuals will develop telangiectasia (otherwise known as broken capillaries) on the nose, cheeks, frown area and chin. In severe cases acne-like pustules can occur.

The exact of rosacea is not known and while rosacea is treatable is it not curable.

Common rosacea triggers include such as sun exposure, stress, hot weather, hot drinks, alcohol, and spicy foods. Individuals with rosacea should avoid these triggers.

Topical antibiotics and medications may assist to control rosacea however these will only minimally improve the appearance of broken capillaries.

Pulsed-dye laser treatments with a laser such as the Candela Vbeam Perfecta® remains the gold standard for treatment of redness, telangiectasia, and transient flushing.

On average three treatments are required at six-week intervals to achieve optimal results with maintenance treatments as required.
